Rare former cinema being sold by Allied Surveyors Scotland

A former cinema turned bingo hall, once a social focal point of post-World War 1 Bathgate, is being sold by Allied Surveyors Scotland.

Opened in 1920, The Pavilion in George Place is the earliest intact survivor of the George Green chain of cinemas.

Their first venue opened in 1911 and were soon regarded as Scotland’s most successful cinema proprietors.

The building, a rare example of a post-war cinema, was designed by John Fairweather who was also the architect responsible for the Edinburgh Playhouse.

Finally closing to cinema goers in 1967, its most recent use was as a bingo hall with 1,067 cinema seats stripped out, but much of the classical styling and interior detailing remains intact.

The category C-listed, 8,470 sq ft building is now available on the market for offers over £260,000.

“The Pavilion has a rich and colourful history enjoying a prominent position in Bathgate town centre,” commented Allied Surveyors Scotland’s head of commercial agency – Scotland, Iain Mercer.

“The consented leisure use will no doubt appeal to a variety of occupiers, but the building may also suit alternative initiatives.”

Viewings can be arranged by contacting the Edinburgh Commercial Agency Department on 0131 357 4455.
